Off-the-Grid

On these pages we'll begin to build a directory of successful stories of families and small communities reducing their dependency on the power grid for their energy needs. In some cases, these parties have become net energy producers who wholesale electricity back to the grid.

If you know of a project that should be listed here, let us know.

Tony Marmot's Energy Farm
Renewable energy for small communities

Over the past three decades British engineer Tony Marmont has been building what he calls an "energy farm". His energy farm can generate modest amounts of renewable electric and bio-fuel energy to power vital infrastructure in small communities. In a 25 minute interview with Julian Darley, he explains how the energy farm system works.

This site has video, audio, and transcript versions of the energy farm interview.

These are a few photographs of West Beacon Energy Farms.

Path to Freedom
Growing your own food is a radical act in today's society.

The Path to Freedom website is the tale of one California family's commitment back in 2001 to leave the grid and live as sustainably as possible. The site chronicles their progress and contains a wealth of information on your family can embark on the same path.

The Path to Freedom homestead supports four adults who live and work full-time on its compact one-fifth acre site.

In our society growing food yourself has become the most radical of acts. It is truly the only effective protest, one that can--and will--overturn the corporate powers that be. By the process of directly working in harmony with nature, we do the one thing most essential to change the world--we change ourselves.
